Our Plea -- Part 1
God has a specific purpose and plan for his church. Through the centuries, this purpose and plan have, at times, been forgotten or ignored. When that occurs, God's children cannot be all that he intends for them to be. With the close of the 18th century, some Christians were feeling that the church had strayed from God's plan as it is presented in the New Testament.
With the desire to restore the church as God intended it to be, Thomas and Alexander Campbell left the Presbyterian Church in the early 1800's and worked to unify believers through the restoration of the authority of the Bible and a resounding call for unity among believers in Jesus.
At nearly the same time, Barton W. Stone sought the same restoration of God's word by dissolving denominational barriers. His work carried him into Illinois where he worked with numerous churches including Jacksonville and Tallula.
While these leaders did not see eye to eye on all things, they demonstrated the call to unity by putting aside their opinions and recognizing one another as fellow Christians. This plea to unite under the authority of Jesus as presented in God's word is foundational to the Greenview Christian Church.
