The History of Greenview Christian Church
In 1825, a group of followers of the Restoration Movement organized the Sugar Grove Christian Church. This group built their first building one mile southwest of Sweetwater, Illinois; and it was this group of Christians which gave birth to the Greenview Christian Church in 1869.
From a report of the clerk of the Sweetwater Christian Church, we read the following: "Whereas a considerable number of the brethren and sisters belonging to the Church at Sweetwater, now living in or near Greenview, and it not being convenient for them to meet regularly for worship at Sweetwater, it was therefore agreed at a regular meeting at Sweetwater on the first Lord's Day in March, 1869; That the brethren at Greenview should rent Sampson's Hall for one year at a cost of $150.00, one-half of which they should pay, and the other halfbe paid by the Sweetwater brethren. Brother Raney, who was then in the employ of the church should visit and preach for the Greenview brethren once each month. Brother D.T. Hughes also agreeing to preach at the same place once per month for one year. And so on the second Lord's Day in March, 1869, a few brethren and sisters met in Sampson Hall, for worship and preaching by D.T. Hughes." Thus began the Greenview Christian Church.
