The History of Greenview Christian Church
Meanwhile, another group of churches in Kentucky were also experimenting with this idea of restoring the church to her Biblical foundations. This group of churches, who came to be known as the Christians, came into being after the Cane Ridge Revival of 1801.
A young preacher by the name of Barton W. Stone had been travelling and preaching through Kentucky when a small congregation in Cane Ridge asked him to become their preacher. He accepted and organized the Cane Ridge Revival together with some other preachers in the area. Little did they expect the revival to have such a great impact. Over 12,000 people from many denominations gathered in the fields and hills surrounding the small Cane Ridge Meeting house. As a result Barton Stone realized that Christian unity was possible when Christians turned to the Bible alone.
Within a few years, Stone and five other preachers had determined to leave the Presbyterian Church and form their own group of churches. Ultimately they decided even this move caused division so they dissolved their own group in order to merge with the church at large. This decision is documented in "The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery" which can be read in its entirety at the right.
