The History of Greenview Christian Church
While Thomas Campbell was preaching in America, his son Alexander Campbell was back in Scotland preparing to bring the rest of the Campbell family to America in 1808. Delayed by a shipwreck, Alexander did not arrive in America until 1809. During this time before arriving in America, Alexander also came to a fresh understanding about creeds and Christian unity when he left the Presbyterian Church. Not realizing his father was wrestling with similar things Alexander came to America in fear of what his father, Thomas, would think. These fears were not necessary, however, because Alexander soon discovered that his father had also left the Presbyterians.
Together Thomas and Alexander began to preach unity of Christians based on the authority of the Bible alone rather than on human creeds. This premise became the foundation of a loosely connected group of churches, called the Disciples of Christ, in Pennsylvania and other surrounding states. Though these churches found fellowship together, they refused to become a division from the church at large. As a result, each congregation was governed from within rather than by a denominational authority.
This attempt at unity became the beginning of what is historically known as the Restoration Movement.
