Greenview Christian Church

The History of Greenview Christian Church

In the early 18th and 19th centuries the prevailing mood among protestant churches was one one of division. Almost any issue was suffiecient to cause division among the various protestant bodies. As a result all of the major protestant bodies were divided and subdivided.

In 1807 a young minister of the Anti-Burgher Seceeder Presbyterian Church, named Thomas Campbell, came to the United States from Scotland. Before coming to America, Thomas had already begun to question the divisions in the church and the narrow attitude that resulted from these. When Thomas arrived in Pennsylvania, there was a hope that the new land could bring the unity Thomas dreamed for. While preaching in this new land, Thomas came in contact with many Christians who were not from the Anti-Burgher Seceeder Presbyterian Church. He began to believe that an individual's belief in Christ was more important than the acceptance of any man-made creed that the many divisions supported.

As a result Thomas Campbell wrote "Declaration and Address" out of hopes that the various church divisions in America would unite under the authority of Jesus Christ alone.
